On Monday, Hilton announced the signing of Umfolozi River Hotel, KwaZulu Natal, Tapestry Collection by Hilton, in partnership with Umfolozi Hotel and Spa located in the heart of historic KwaZulu-Natal.
Expanding lifestyle presence in South Africa
The partnership with Umfolozi Hotel and Spa is expected to continue expanding Hilton’s lifestyle presence in South Africa, Patrick Fitzgibbon, senior vice president, Development, Europe, Middle East and Africa.
“Northern KwaZulu-Natal’s rich cultural heritage and proximity to iconic wildlife and natural attractions make it a compelling location for Tapestry Collection by Hilton, as guests increasingly seek distinctive, experience-led stays rooted in their surroundings.
“With 12 hotels trading and in the pipeline across the country, and plans to open more than 100 hotels in Africa, we remain focused on providing more ways to stay for our guests by strengthening our portfolio and introducing more of our award-winning brands to key destinations across the continent.”
Growth across key leisure destinations in the country
Expected to open in 2028, the hotel is said to mark the brand’s second Tapestry Collection signing in South Africa within the last year, demonstrating Hilton’s growth across key leisure destinations in the country.
The signing took place during Africa’s Travel Indaba in Durban with representatives from Hilton, Umfolozi Hotel and Spa (Pty) Ltd, and Valor Hospitality Partners.
Traditional Zulu life, history and craftsmanship
Located in Mtubatuba in the Zulu cultural heartland, Umfolozi River Hotel will be rooted in a region known for its cultural significance and natural landscapes.
The area is home to landmarks such as the Valley of the Chiefs and local villages offering insights into traditional Zulu life, history and craftsmanship.
The hotel will also provide access to some of South Africa’s most renowned natural attractions, including Hluhluwe–Imfolozi Game Reserve, approximately 30 minutes away, and iSimangaliso Wetland Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site recognised for its diverse ecosystems.
Immersive, locally inspired stay
Umfolozi River Hotel, Tapestry Collection by Hilton, will feature 102 guest rooms and suites, alongside leisure, wellness and event facilities, including an all-day dining restaurant, lobby café and bar, spa, gym, pool, as well as two meeting rooms and a ballroom for corporate events and social gatherings.
Set within the forests of KwaZulu-Natal, guests will enjoy an immersive, locally inspired stay, with community-driven experiences that connect guests to the destination’s culture and heritage.
Celebrating KwaZulu-Natal’s unique character while delivering the world-class hospitality
The partnership with Hilton to open Umfolozi River Hotel, Tapestry Collection by Hilton, marks an important milestone for the latter company and for the wider region, says Zakhele Mkhize, executive chairman, Umfolozi Hotel and Spa.
“The hotel will celebrate KwaZulu-Natal’s unique character while delivering the world-class hospitality standards Hilton is globally known for. We look forward to creating a destination that offers meaningful cultural connection, natural beauty and a memorable guest experience.”
Property operations
The property will be operated by Valor Hospitality Partners, a global leader in integrated hotel management and operations solutions, and one of Hilton’s trusted hospitality partners.
This signing is a testament to the continued growth and sophistication of the hospitality sector in KwaZulu-Natal, says Tony Romer-Lee, Valor co-founder and managing partner AMEA.
“We are thrilled to partner with Mr Mkhize and Hilton to bring this unique brand to South Africa. This project goes beyond design and delivery-it is deeply rooted in the community.
“Through our partnership with the South Africa College of Tourism, we are committed to upskilling local talent, ensuring that the hotel creates sustainable employment and meaningful opportunities for the surrounding communities.”
This signing follows recent Tapestry Collection by Hilton signings across Sub-Saharan Africa, reflecting Hilton’s continued focus on expanding its lifestyle portfolio across the region.
Hilton is a leading global hospitality company with a portfolio of 27 world-class brands comprising more than 9,200 properties and over 1.3 million rooms, in 144 countries and territories.
In March, Hilton said with four hotels in operation and another four in the pipeline, it expects to double its presence in South Africa in the next three to five years.
The hotel company said that featuring vibrant cities, natural beauty and rich culture, South Africa’s appeal as a global travel destination continues to create exciting growth opportunities.
Upcoming developments
Amongst these is The Sterling Hotel, Tapestry Collection by Hilton, scheduled to open in Sibaya, KwaZulu‑Natal next year.
Further inland, Hilton Garden Inn Polokwane, set to open in 2028, will form part of a mixed‑use development near the city’s established business district.
