Description

This historic property is steeped in heritage and situated on ten acres in a prominent position on the brink of Howick. Run as a four star guest farm for many years, the early settler homestead comprises the two original houses, the first being the original Voortrekker house adjoining a 150 year old blue stone English Settler house flanked by an impressive Belhambra tree with a stunning trunk and crown.

Special features include beautiful Yellowwood (from the Karkloof Forest) beams and ceilings in the main house, additional features include a pool, a pool/ games room, four water tanks, three phase power and soft borehole water.

The pretty garden attracts an array of birdlife and some wildlife and there is a large paddock for the donkeys and an indigenous forest beyond the pond and old tennis court. Fruit trees on the property include Methley plums, orange and lemon trees, crab apples, pecannut… Some of the valuable trees in the forest include Black Stinkwood, Cape Chestnut, Tulip trees, and Ginkgo trees.

Stocklands Farm is a property steeped in history and situated close to the centre of Howick. It was run as a 4 star graded Bed and Breakfast for many years. In the 1960’s dairy cattle were raised on the ample pastures and for the many years of its existence, it has been a warm and welcoming family home.

In about 1836, many of the Boers who had been ousted by the British at the Battle of Congella moved away from Durban and settled in and around Pietermaritzburg. One of them, David Benjamin Snyman , was granted land on the far side of the uMngeni River which he named Cypherfontein because of the purity of the water in the springs that flowed across the land. He built a small shale house which he extended to include a large room with a solder above. As large numbers of British settlers arrived in the Midlands of Natal many of the original Boer settlers left to go further north. They included Snyman who, after selling his land to the Reverend James Archbell in 1843, went with them. Archbell built a large house of dressed blue stone very close to the original house for his family. In 1846 Cypherfontein and several adjacent farms were surveyed and James Archbell was given the title deeds. Part of this land was subdivided and formed the small town that is now Howick. After many subdivisions over the years, Stocklands Farm now consists of 10 acres in extent.

Eventually these two houses were joined to form one big house. Special features include pit sawn Yellowwood beams, ceilings and doors all sourced from the forested areas around the area, original light fittings and a verandah that runs the full length of the house and overlooks the beautiful garden. This main house consists of 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, large sitting room, dining room, pantry and linen room and laundry. There are also 2 office areas.

Attached to the Main House are two large bedrooms, both with en suite bathrooms and access to the verandah. Additional units include a three bedroom house, a two bedroom cottage and a one bedroom cottage. In the garden there is a swimming pool and poolroom.

There are three garages, four water tanks, three phase electricity and a borehole which supplies water to the property. There is a pump house with a water pump and also houses a generator to use during power outages to keep water on for all the units.

The well-established gardens attract a large array of birdlife and some wild life. There are extensive paddocks, and an indigenous forest beyond the pond and old tennis court. Fruit trees supply Methley plums, oranges, lemons and limes and pecan nuts.

· eleven bedrooms : three in the main house, two in Annex, three bedrooms in The Stables, two bedrooms in Dairy Cottage, and one bedroom in Plumtree Cottage

· There is another bedsitter – Room 4 – which is not attached to any of the cottages but used for overflows!
