The Cape Town International Jazz Festival (CTIJF) today announced the addition of Bombay Lights, a groundbreaking ensemble from India, to this year’s festival lineup which is already shaping up to be one of the most anticipated events on the music calendar with tickets disappearing fast.
With Phase 1 of the artist lineup unveiled (see below), jazz enthusiasts and music lovers are rushing to secure their spots for what promises to be an unforgettable weekend of world-class performances.
Led by visionary drummer Vinayak Pol, Bombay Lights introduces the shehnai — an ancient Indian instrument akin to the clarinet — into the jazz world, creating a rich, immersive soundscape that blends traditional Indian rhythms with modern harmonies. “I always wanted to build on the traditional Indian sounds and classical forms through instrumentation,” says Pol, reflecting on the band’s distinctive approach.
Having performed to sold-out venues across India within just a year of their formation, Bombay Lights has captivated audiences with their dynamic compositions, drawing inspiration from the vibrant festivals of their homeland. With a second EP on the way, featuring collaborations with renowned Indian and international artists, their CTIJF debut promises to be a must-see performance.
The festival, known for its eclectic mix of established legends and rising stars, has once again delivered a lineup that blends jazz, soul, Afro-pop, and experimental sounds. And with over 20 more artists still to be announced – including some major international surprises such as Bombay Lights – the excitement is only just beginning
